January 1976 Bill Bruford joins as percussionist, and plays live with the band before the first album was released; but does not seem to involved with the album sessions. February 1976 Release of "Trick Of The Tail". Apr-July 1976 "Trick Of The Tail" tour. July 1976 Release of "Unorthadox Behavior" (Collins/Goodsall/Jones/Lumley) Unorthadox must have been recorded before A Trick Of The Tail, or in the period between February and April 1976. With the same line up Brand X records live at the BBC Radio's Alan Freeman show two of the three tunes recorded then are never released on any album. Collins tours with Brand X during this period before he returns to Genesis in Late 1976 for recording sessions. This is the last time he toured with them until 1979. 1978 Goodsall goes to trident to demo some fusion tracks with Bill Bruford, Bayete (Todd Cochran) and Don Harvey from Automatic Man. Then plays some guitar on Bruford first solo album “Feel Good To Me". September 1978 Release of "Masques" (Jones/Goodsall/Pert/Robinson/Burgi) Robin Lumley produced "Masques", bringing in Peter Robinson on keyboards. Phil Collins was not involved with masques at all, since Genesis had an almost non-stop late 1977 and 1978 tour. Drummer Chuck Burgi takes over the studio drums and does one US tour including opening for Genesis in New York's Central Park and Toronto's CN stadium. Percy Jones plays the Wal bass and develops his distinctive sound for the first time on this album. In 1978 during The "Masques" tour John Goodsall suffered from an attack of tendonitis caused by excessive playing and tour schedules, He was replaced by Mike Miller during the second half of the tour. Approximate dates based on magazine articles: August 2: Burgi/Goodsall/Robinson/Jones/Pert. August 9: Burgi/Miller/Robinson/Jones/Pert. October 31: Clarke/Miller/Robinson/Jones/Pert.
1979 Goodsall,Robinson,Pert and Lumley tour with (Rod) Argent using Weather report rythm section Chester Thompson and Alfonso Johnson. The UK tour culminate with an Argent appearance on British rock show "The Old Grey Whistle Test", Brand X has performed several times on this show with Collins between '76 -'80.May 1979 Release of "Product" (Goodsall/Collins/Giblin/Lumley/Jones/Robinson/Clarke/Pert) Brand X was essentially Goodsall/Jones/Robinson/Clarke/Pert with Robin Lumley and Phil Collins both adding themselves to the list of performing musicians. For some reason. John Giblin joined, because Percy had moved to New York, he was John's neighbor and happened to sound a bit like Percy. The band essentially split into Lumley/Giblin/Collins and Robinson/Jones/Pert/Clarke with Goodsall playing all the guitars, recording in shifts. "Product" marked two firsts for Collins; Wal to Wal was the first time he used a drum machine on a record. Soho was the first time he recorded a song on his home studio and then took it into the studio, a modus operandi he would use often. 1979 The "Product" tour, (Lumley/Robinson/Collins/Goodsall/Jones) A slimmer Brand X with two keyboardist took to the road and even included a few songs with vocals (...And So To F...and Dont Make Waves; Soho was not performed). That was the last tour of the regular Brand X before the reformation in 1992.
